Platte Canyon School District Joins Safe2Tell Program

Feb. 26, 2007

Platte Canyon School District has joined the Safe2Tell program as part of its safety enhancement efforts. Safe2Tell is a toll-free hotline, 1-877-542-SAFE (7233). Students, teachers, parents or any community member with a safety concern may call anonymously to make a report. The line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the Colorado State Patrol communication center.

Safe2Tell trainers provided information about the program to students at the elementary (4th and 5th graders), middle and high school levels in Platte Canyon in late February.

Other schools and school districts throughout the state currently are participating in the program. Callers have used the hotline to report such situations as threats, fights, bullying, child abuse, harassment, substance abuse and vandalism.

When someone calls in a report, trained call takers document the information and give instructions for follow-up. All tips are routed to the proper authorities, and all viable tips are thoroughly investigated. State law and procedures established by the program guarantee anonymity, and calls are not tracked.

The program was developed as a joint effort of The Colorado Trust and the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
